Northport Salmon Slam

Rules and Regulations

This is a one day, three prize Tournament.
$2,000 for first place
$1,000 for second place
$500 for third place

1) Fishing will begin with lines in the water at 5:30 am in Leland or Northport. A Tournament Official will be checking boats and coolers at 5:00 am through 7:00 am at both launch sites. Tournament ends with lines out of the water at 4:00 pm. All coolers must be checked and sealed no later than 5:00 pm.All coolers will be transported to Northport by Tournament Officials for weigh-in at 6:00 pm at Haserot Park in Northport. The weigh-in will be held in conjunction with the Wine Festival taking place in Haserot Park. All coolers must be transported by tournament officials.

2) The Northport Salmon Slam Captain’s meeting will be held at Haserot Park in Northport at 7:00 pm on Friday. One crew member from each boat must attend the Captain’s meeting to receive the boat registration number, final rules, regulations and updated information concerning the tournament. All boats shall have an operating VHF marine radio.

3) All participants must fish from a MOVING boat (trolling). A maximum of 6 lines may be in the water at any one time. Fish may be taken only by hook and line as prescribed by State of Michigan fishing regulations. Mutilated or foul hooked fish will be disqualified at the discretion of the Tournament Officials.

4) Failure to report a fish immediately to Tournament Officials on the radio may, at the Tournament Official’s discretion be reason for disqualification of said fish. All participants who are eligible for prize money may be requested to submit to a LIE DETECTOR TEST. Failure to comply will result in disqualification and forfeiture of any prizes.

5) No boat may come in direct physical contact with the shore or another boat (i.e. to exchange fish and/or equipment, or lend assistance) unless authorized by Tournament Officials. Physical contact with the shore or another boat, (except at the approved launch sites during approved breaks, Tournament Headquarters {The Depot building located at the Northport Marina, next to Haserot Park}, or for inspection by Tournament Officials) will result in disqualification. Once you have weighed-in fish you are done fishing for the Tournament. Early weigh-ins need to be called in and approved by the Director.

7) Channel 68 is the Official Tournament channel. All pertinent information will be broadcast on Channel 68. If you want to talk to Tournament Officials hail them on Channel 68 (you may directed to another channel). All boats must have an operating VHF marine radio. No boats may begin fishing before the announcement to begin fishing on VHF marine channel 68. Upon conclusion of the Tournament fishing hours all lines must be immediately removed from the water and fishing must cease. If you have a fish on the line at cease fishing time you may, at the Tournament Official’s discretion (where visual confirmation can be obtained), be granted an additional five minutes to land the fish. Failure to land the fish by the allotted grace period will disqualify that fish. Anyone who fishes before or after hours will be immediately disqualified.

8) Tournament Officials may suspend the Tournament due to bad weather, if necessary. Four (4) hours (not necessarily consecutive) of fishing will constitute a complete Tournament. In case of bad weather the fishing will be in Grand Traverse Bay. The decision to fish will be broadcasted at 5:30 am on Channel 68.

9) Each team will weigh in(in their cooler) ONE fish. The fish will be a salmon species. The captain will choose one fish to be weighed and that will be the official entry for the contest.

10) In the event of a tie for largest fish on weights for prizes, the tie breaker will be a length measurement to determine the winner. In the event that there is still a tie the monies will be split among teams. All protests must be accompanied by a $100 cash deposit and must be registered in writing to Tournament Officials no later than 5 minutes after the last fish has been weighed-in. If the protest is upheld the deposit is refunded – if the protest is not upheld the deposit is forfeited.

11) All photographs/records are the property of the Northport-Omena Chamber of Commerce (and contestants hereby consent to their usage). All decisions by the Northport-Omena Chamber Officials are Final.

12) The entry fee is $150 per boat. Make checks payable to Northport-Omena Chamber of Commerce. Good Luck!
