For mainland France, there are thirteen administrative regions. However, there are an additional five regions in overseas locations (Guadeloupe, Guyane/French Guiana, La Réunion, Martinique and Mayotte.

Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region is located in southeastern France, on the Switzerland-Italy border. It consists of the subregions of Ardèche and Drôme, Auvergne, Greater Lyon, Isère, Savoie and Haute-Savoie, and contains the major towns and cities of Lyon, Annecy, Aurillac, Chambery and Chamonix. The region is generally characterised by its rolling hills and mountain ranges, making it the perfect destination for hiking holidays, ski holidays and other adventure holidays.

The region was merged in 2014 as part of a parliament change to reduce the number of metropolitan regions, effective of 2016. The region used to be two separate regions of Auvergne and Rhône-Alpes, which were merged to the now current name and form.

Bourgogne-Franche-Comté is a region located in east-central France and was created in 2016 after the merging and reorganisation of Burgundy and Franche-Comté. The region is known for its wine and cheese, its rich history and architecture and also the Jura mountains in the east. Brittany, or Bretagne in French, is a region in France located in the north-west of the country. The region is largely characterised by its distinct features and its Celtic heritage, which is shared with the UK's Cornwall and Wales. Although the region is divided into four administrative departments of Côtes-d'Armor, Finistère, Ille-et-Vilaine and Morbihan, Brittany is notably split into two different areas which are each have very different cultures, language, habits, dance and food. The Haute-Bretagne is in the east of Brittany and is where the Gallo language is spoken, whereas the Basse-Bretagne region is in the west, and is where the Breton language is used.

There are a number of cities in Brittany, such as Brest, Lorient, Rennes and Quimper, and also a number of important destinations such as Carnac, Lac de Guerlédan and Pays de Montfort, meaning there is plenty to see and do in this region.

Centre-Val de Loire

The Centre-Val de Loire region of France, is a central region located inland, to the south-west of Paris. It is characterised by its historical towns, the multitude of vineyards and châteaux's (castles), and also the valley of the River Loire which is reflected in its name.
